BAC Calculator – What is Your Blood Alcohol Content?

A BAC calculator is helpful in assessing what your estimated BAC may be.  BAC (blood alcohol content) is the amount of alcohol in your blood after drinking alcoholic beverages.  In Michigan, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a BAC of .08 or greater if you are 21 or older.  However, if you are under the age of 21, the legal limit is .02.

Although a BAC calculator is only an estimation, it is useful to consider whether your level of alcohol impairment is safe for certain activities.  It is important to note that even a mild impairment can have an effect on routine activities.

Different alcoholic beverages and their serving sizes affect how much alcohol has been ingested. Therefore, when using a BAC calculator to calculate your alcohol blood content, you should enter the correct alcoholic beverages that have been consumed.

Other than the number of alcoholic beverages consumed, there are several factors that can affect your BAC that are not considered when using a BAC Calculator.

  • How fast you are drinking. If you are drinking alcohol faster than your liver can process it, your BAC will increase and your level of impairment will be greater.
  • Body weight. People who have a greater body weight are less affected by the alcohol than someone whose weight is less that consumes the same amount of alcohol.
  • Gender.  Men and women metabolize alcohol differently.
  • Food in your stomach. Consuming alcohol on a full stomach will slow the speed of absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream.  Drinking on an empty stomach will increase the absorption rate and increase a BAC at a faster rate.
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medication. Consuming alcohol while taking certain prescription and/or over-the-counter medications can increase the effects of intoxication.  In addition, mixing alcohol with some medications can lead to serious interactions that can be harmful.  You should never drink alcohol while taking any medication without first consulting a pharmacist or your doctor.
